Ezousa Winery, Red

2018

Ezousa Winery is located in Kannaviou village in Pafos region at an altitude of 400 meters.  Soils in the region are volcanic which favors indigenous varieties such as Maratheftiko and Xynisteri.

Maratheftiko is an ancient variety of Cyprus. With the revival of small boutique wineries in Cyprus was rediscovered and its cultivation is increasing, as it offers a distinctive character to local wines.

Kannaviou, Pafos, Cyprus. Dry, Still, Red, Maratheftiko 40%, Syrah 30%, Mourverde 30%, 13,5% alc. 9 months in oak barrels.

Deep red color. Fruity, rich nose with sour cherries, black fruits, strawberries and some mint and licorice. Palate tastes like a warm climate Pinot: clean fruits and smooth character, light to medium body, good acidity and smooth tannins. Oak is well integrated. Fresh and fruity finish. Match with beef barbecue, meat roast, sausages, grilled tuna, patés and cold cuts

How often do you find yourself in this situation? Being in a wine shop and standing indecisive in front of racks filled with bottles?

Do you prefer large wine-galleries or small wine shops just right the one my friend @winebeat described ideally in his blog's article? Do you shop mainly online? Or prefer being there in person?

On exploring Moschofilero grape's food pairings we tried Monograph from @gaiawines paired with a traditional Greek dish: veal's liver cooked in olive oil and lemon and sprinkled with oregano and thyme. Strong aromas of the variety balance and refine the flavors of herbs, while acidity and crispiness mitigates the oiliness. Great!!!

Troupis Winery, Tomi White
2018
.
P.D.O. Mantineia., Peloponnese, Greece. Dry, Still, White, 100% Moschofilero, 12.5%  alc
.
Often compared to Riesling, Traminer and Viognier, Moschofilero has its own distinctive personality and a lot of potential!!!
.
Light lemon-green color in the glass. Lemon zest, orange blossom and rose aromas are pronounced on nose, followed by jasmine. Fruity and vibrant in the palate gives us a pleasant feel of freshness in every sip: stone fruits, sweet lemon, grapefruit and sweet rose water, white flowers and some pepper. Its crunchy acidity is typical of Moschofilero but Tomi has also nice weight and structure. Finishes crisp and clean with a bergamot- like aftertaste.
.
Match with low fat meat cooked in lemon, green pies and tarts, salads with citrus flavored vinaigrettes, fried fish and raw fish cured or dressed in citrus juices, like ceviche or tiradito.

We had a great visit @domainevassiliou this weekend.
.
In a modern visitors space at ground level, decorated with vintage objects from the winery's history, we had the opportunity to taste some of the winery's labels, most of them made by Savvatiano, a native to Attica variety with great potential.
We also tasted a great Nemea wine, made at the winery's twin brother Nemeion Estate.
.
Mr George Vassileiou, our polite host, shared with us his knowledge about Savvatiano and the many different styles of wines that can produce. During wine tasting he also answered all of our questions about climatic variations, soil types, winemaking processes and wine types in Nemea. .

Full bodied Port wines age for a relatively short time in large oak vats.

These include Ruby Ports, usually aged in vat for 2 or 3 years, Reserve Tawny which are generally of higher quality and age for about 7 years and Late Bottled Vintage Ports which remain in vat for between 4 and 6 years.

These particular 20.000 liter vats contain Sandeman Reserve Tawny port that is a blend composed of Tawnys from different ages and origins. They usually vary between 4 and 12 years of age, achieving an average age of about 7 years.

Staying in the vat for so long exposes wines to to gradual oxidation and evaporation. As so, they mellow to a red amber tawny color and evolve "nutty" aromas and flavors on a typical background of dried fruits and vanilla

History Thursday ūüďĖ

Last Sunday we had the chance to visit ūüŹõÔłŹFolklore Museum of Kymi, in Euboea Island, just 2h drive from Athens. Kymi is my father‚Äôs city of origin and a beloved place since I have plenty of childhood summer memories. This charming museum is the largest and best organized folk museum of Euboea and one of the best regional museums in Greece.

In the ūüď∑ photos is the collection of ūüćávinicultural objects that symbolically picture the period at the 2nd¬†half of the 19th¬†cent, when the famous Kymi‚Äôs wineūüć∑ was widely exported.

This wine was made from Black Kountoura of Kymi or Mavrokountoura ūüćá, a clone of Aegean‚Äôs Mandilaria and is described by ancient Greek authors as a peculiar wine with dark ruby color and strong tannins.

This dark color had attracted Frenchūüáęūüá∑ winemakers as an implement to enhance the color of their reds. Kymiots became wealthy.

In the late 20th century French custom laws had a devastating effect to the local wine production.

Around 1930 the phylloxera destroyed all vineyards of Kymi. Oral narrations describe the day to day progress of the epidemic as a yellow thing going up from the port to the city, destroying all the vines within a month!!
.
! Today, much discussion is taking place about Greek indigenous grape varieties and the distinctive features condensed in the terroir wines that can produce: Vlachiko, Negoska, Mavrotragano, Fokiano are only some of the 800 of thoseūüćáThe effort to save them is continuous since the data on their cultivation and vinification is gone and everything should start from zero.

This is the modern story of Mavrokountoura: a constant winemaker, Apostolos Mountrichas from @avantisestate after searching for many years, he discovered a surviving vineyard. Through research and hard work he managed to replant  and recreate a vineyard near his winery, not far from Kymi. He now produces 2 reds and 2 rose wines from Mavrokountoura.

The fruity and spicy reds, Mavrokountoura (refer to previous post) and Falcon‚Äôs Hill Red (upcoming review) are concentrated and refined with full body and ‚Äúsmart‚ÄĚ tannins, while the rose, Falcon‚Äôs Hill Rose and Lenga Pink (upcoming reviews) are layered and elegant.
