Long Lane.
City of Carlisle, UK.

I just love old street signs, but usually they're positioned too awkwardly to get a decent picture of. However, this one in the lovely alleyway of Long Lane is perfectly placed. I enjoy looking into the history of place names, but I think this one is pretty obvious with the alley seeming almost never-ending from this perspective. The illuminated lamp reflecting off the wet pavement created a nice touch of warmth to the scene, and I really liked the texture and pattern of the brickwork.

The building bounding the left-hand side of this lane is @bookendsbookshopcarlisle which is a fabulous and eclectic bookshop with a lovely cafe. They also stock a range of my greeting cards featuring images of Carlisle, so next time you're in the area why not pop in for a look? 😉

Bampton Grange.
Lake District, UK.

Some pretty spectacular crepuscular rays seen from Knipe Moor in the eastern Lake District National Park. I waited for the exact moment when a ray often light beamed onto the small village of Bampton Grange nestled in the Lowther Valley. The moody mountains created a dramatic backdrop whilst complimenting the stormy clouds overhead.

Barwise Court.
City of Carlisle, UK.

I've previously posted a black & white version of this scene, but I also liked the colour version so have decided to upload it too. This one was taken from a slightly different perspective and with a longer shutter speed to capture some movement in the sky. The combination of drainpipes are what initially caught my eye here, so I used them to compose the picture. I returned a couple of times to capture this picture as I wanted a wet morning where the light would reflect off the pavement, creating more colour and depth to the scene. The lights inside the building opposite were also illuminated (which I hadn't planned) adding a nice extra touch!

Highland Laddie Lane.
City of Carlisle, UK.

Dodging heavy showers the other evening, I decided to venture out with my camera and thankfully the rain stopped later in the day.

I opted to photograph one of the many lanes dissecting the town centre of Carlisle, Highland Laddie Lane. There is no longer a street sign here, but the lane is named on an 1821 map of the city. This cut-through links Blackfriars Street with the pedestrianised English Street, and at it's eastern end is barely the width of one person.

I loved this perspective, with the rugged and older bricks to the right contrasting with the more modern and geometric architecture to the left. I waited for the lamp to illuminate and it further highlighted the lovely textures of the stonework. I converted the image to monochrome to further enhance the bygone feeling and moody atmosphere.

Rising From The Grave.
Great Mell Fell.
Lake District, UK.

Taken last year on the slopes of Great Mell Fell. I spent a good few hours on this foggy morning exploring the wooded eastern contours of the hillside. This is a strange and otherworldly place, with gnarled bark, distorted branches and dank moss everywhere. I stumbled upon this decaying tree, which to me looked like a claw reaching out from the decomposing pile of tree carcasses beneath. A truly eerie yet intriguing place. One would certainly not want to get lost here in the dark!

Barwise Court.
City of Carlisle, UK.

A atmospheric lane dissecting the town centre of Carlisle. I have walked through this alley many times without really stopping to appreciate it. It has an very industrial feel and perhaps these building were once factories. I liked the drainpipes running down the walls which I used to compose the picture. Also, the rainy morning meant that the lights reflected nicely on the pavement.

Carlisle Citadel Station.
City of Carlisle, UK.

This is one of those buildings in Carlisle where I didn't appreciate it's beauty until I stopped to photograph it. The Citadel Station is a Grade II* listed building, designed by architect William Tite in a blend of Gothic and Tudor styles.

Constructed at a cost of £53,000, the station was built between 1846 and 1848. On 10 September 1847, it was officially opened to rail traffic even though the building was not yet complete.

I visited early one Sunday morning to capture this picture as I knew it would be quieter than most other days. In fact, when I got there the station was completely locked up, so I was able to photograph it with no cars or people getting in the shot. My favourite part of the building is the clock tower, so I captured it from this angle to show off it's dominant presence. I also liked how I managed to capture it at exactly 6o'clock, which I didn't notice until editing my pictures at home.

This picture is one of 12 featured in my City of Carlisle 2020 calendar, available to purchase here: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/619182492/city-of-carlisle-2020-a3-calendar-by-m-j?ref=shop_home_active_4&crt=1

Carlisle Cathedral from Castle Street.
City of Carlisle, UK.

The impressive eastern facade of Carlisle Cathedral seen from Castle Street. The East Window pictured here is the largest and most complex Flowing Decorated Gothic window in England, even though the Cathedral building itself is the country's second smallest. I searched around for compositions and noticed these two old fashioned street lamps framed the architecture perfectly.

70000 Britannia journeying over Ribblehead Viaduct.
Yorkshire Dales, UK.

Since when did I become a trainspotter??!!!!!! I'm really enjoying doing some railway photographing lately, especially as there are plenty of locomotives running along the scenic Settle-Carlisle route during the summer months. Today I headed back to the mighty Ribblehead Viaduct, as I noticed a composition on my last visit that I wanted to try. These limestone rocks had caught my eye, and I liked this perspective of the viaduct itself showing it's height and curving design.
The locomotive is 70000 Britannia is owned by the Royal Scot Locomotive and General Trust. It was constructed in Crewe in 1951, and served 15 years before being withdrawn in 1966. The engine was later preserved, before returning to the main line in 2011.

Although there wasn't much sunshine about today, I liked the moody sky lending itself nicely to the foreboding viaduct.

6201 Princess Elizabeth crosses Ribblehead Viaduct.
Yorkshire Dales, UK.

LMS Princess Royal Class 6201 Princess Elizabeth is a preserved steam locomotive, being one of onlytwo preserved Princesses. Here she can be seen crossing the mighty Ribblehead Viaduct in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. This Grade II* listed structure is the longest viaduct on the whole Settle-Carlisle railway, boasting 24 stone arches spanning a total distance of 400m.

Ribblehead was built between 1869-1874 and necessitated a large workforce of up to 2,300 men. It's construction caused such loss of life that the railway paid for an expansion of the local graveyard at Chapel-le-dale.

Here, the viaduct is pictured with the distinctive peak of Pen-y-ghent towering in the distance. I liked this composition with the foreground drystone wall and sheep scattered in the pasture. I included the whole of the viaduct in frame to convey the scale, and luckily the locomotive had plenty of smoke to help it stand out as it is dwarfed by the impressive structure.

Dean Tait's Lane.
City of Carlisle, UK.

Looking through the archway of Dean Tait's Lane down the cobbled street of Paternoster Row in the historic quarter of Carlisle. I love the way the entrance frames the street lamp perfectly, with the light illuminating the interesting patterns and textures of the surrounding brickwork.

I'd photographed this scene previously, but decided there were some more compositions I'd like to try out including this close-up perspective of the arch. However, there's hardly ever a moment when there aren't cars parked along the street opposite, so I had to return on many occasions until I had a car-free view.

The lane itself is named after Archibald Tait who was The Dean of Carlisle and later went on to become Bishop of London and then Archbishop of Canterbury.

35018 British India Line crossing Dandry Mire Viaduct.
Yorkshire Dales, UK.

Steam locomotive 35018 British India Line crossing Dandry Mire Viaduct a few weeks ago. This viaduct is one of the lower structures along the Settle-Carlisle railway, standing only 50ft tall. Originally there were plans to build the railway along an embankment here, but as construction started it was realised that the ground was too soft and instead this viaduct was built.
The train British India Line was constructed in 1945 by the Southern Railway. It was then withdrawn from service in August 1964, and didn't fully return to the main line until 21 March 2018 after being preserved to it's former glory.

I liked this composition with the foreground heather creating some interesting shapes, and the distant mountains of Swarth Fell and Wild Boar Fell forming a dramatic backdrop. Just in front of Dandry Mire Viaduct, the remains of the Wensleydale Railway which ran to the nearby Garsdale Station are still visible.

Just in front of Dandry Mire Viaduct, the remains of the Wensleydale Railway which ran to the nearby Garsdale Station are still visible.  #yorkshiredales  #yorkshiredalesnationalpark  #railwayviaduct  #railway  #steamtrain  #steamlocomotive  #settletocarlisle  #settletocarlislerailway  #ukpotd  #uk_greatshots  #uknationalparks  #uk_scenery  #igers_britishisles  #rural_love  #cumbria  #igerscumbria  #networkrail  #settletocarlisleway  #dandrymire  #dandrymireviaduct  #garsdale  #moorcockinn  #35018britishindialine  #35018  #35018locomotive  #britishindialine  #wcrc  #westcoastrailways

45690 Leander crossing Dent Head Viaduct.
Yorkshire Dales, UK.

Pictured yesterday during a lovely day in Dales, this is steam locomotive 45690 Leander crossing the wonderfully picturesque Dent Head Viaduct. Built between 1869 and 1875 by the Midland Railway Company, the viaduct forms part of the iconic Settle to Carlisle Railway. Boasting 10 arches, it stands 100ft tall above Fell End Gill which flows beneath it.
The train itself was constructed at Crewe in March 1936 and named after the Royal Navy ship HMS Leander, which in turn was named after the Greek hero Leander.

It was a lovely calm day, and while I was waiting for the train to arrive I could hear a cuckoo hidden in the trees beneath the viaduct, echoing loudly everytime it called. The lush greenery surrounding the viaduct was terrific, contrasting perfectly with the moody light and stormy clouds.

Abbey Gatehouse from Abbey Street.
City of Carlisle, UK.

A moody evening on the streets of Carlisle captured a few weeks ago. This gatehouse always reminds me of a horned beast, guarding the entrance to the Carlisle Cathedral precincts. I loved how the cobbles reflected beneath the illuminated streetlamp, leading into the image perfectly. Also, the window above the Abbey Gate was also lit up, combining to create some more interest.

Rusland Valley.
Lake District, UK.

A wide-angle woodland scene captured in the Rusland Valley last weekend. I just loved the combination of colours; from the foreground bluebells, to the burning embers of the leftover leaves of last autumn, and also the fresh green spring foliage of this year's new growth. The dappled hazy sun filtered through the trees adding some lovely dappled light to the splendid sylvan scene.
