Someone recently asked: Why do you own a branding photography business? Well, I can tell you, it’s uncharted territory, and scary at times! . I pursue entrepreneurship because of the creativity I get to lean on every day, and my mission to truly change the life of at least one business owner - and have her realize how much power, drive, and showing up can give her the life she wants. . Why do you own your own business? Holler at me in the comments!
There are some things that people LOVE on Instagram, like sarcastic memes or animal videos, but one thing YOU guys love are my tutorials! . Today, I’m teaching you how to take better photos of your products with your iPhone, using these beautiful natural bath salts from @magicskinnutrients! . First, look for shaded areas outside to get even lighting around your product. Then, invest in 4 white foam core boards from Hobby Lobby or Target to create a light box and clean background for your products. Finally, look for props/plants/textured pieces to add interest and more to the story of your products. Did this help? Watch my stories for a more in depth look into my process, and let me know what you’ll do with these tips in the comments below!
When you know, you know, am I right? Some business owners have been on the entrepreneurial path since birth…I’m new to this thrilling/sometimes terrifying adventure. . I’m a brand photographer and I love it, and I’ve been running Katherine Schwingel Photography for almost one year. I knew, without question, that I had to pursue this whole-heartedly when I wasn’t fulfilled in my office job (and it showed), and I had no excuses left to put off pursuing my dreams. . Writing that makes me cringe, but I know there are many of you out there who need to hear that everything can feel wrong and out of line with who you are, and you can still rise to unimaginable places - with a lot of hard work and time. When did you know you were on the right path?
Truth or Lie: I am completely confident at all times, in every aspect of my business! . Of course, we all doubt ourselves sometimes. My struggle usually rears its head around networking events and when it does, I repeat to myself that it takes only one other person to make a connection. You better believe I’ll be saying that walking into the @insporising event Thursday night at @thelostbean in Costa Mesa – are you going?! Tickets are still available, so grab one and come say hi if you see me! . When are you challenged by doubts? And how do you squash them?
If you could give ONE piece of encouragement for all to hear, what would it be? Mine is “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help enough other people get what they want”, as said by Zig Ziglar. Share yours below! (And feel free to list more than one if you can’t decide!)
As summer sloooowly begins to fade, and I will the leaves to change in sunny California, that calls for some change in my business too! . Soon, I will be adding mini branding sessions to my packages and I just can’t WAIT! If you’re interested, follow the link in my bio to sign up for my email updates, and you will be the first to know when my limited spots go live!
Saturday schedules flex week to week for me. Sometimes it starts with a tall glass of water, coffee in a mug, and a walk around the Back Bay. Today it started with a library visit and devouring @katenorthrup’s book Money: A Love Story (review coming) combined with brainstorming the possibilities of helping another creative entrepreneur SHOW UP for themselves and their dreams. It will end with dinner with close friends, which is equally important!! What gets you up and motivated on Saturdays?
Much like pulling all sorts of ingredients together to bake a pie, my branding session require tons of preparation and work behind the scenes. First, I look through your Pinterest inspiration, reflect on your answers to my questionnaire, and then create a detailed shot list based on your photo needs for that specific season. Without these key items, I couldn’t deliver the level of quality my clients have grown to expect! Do you like a behind the scenes look like this? Throw me any questions you think of!
Truth bomb: You can probably find a photographer to provide branding photos for less than I charge. That’s just real talk. But if it matters to you that I offer pre-session brand strategy/social media posts with my higher packages and years of product styling experience for our session, I’m your gal. . I take pride in not only providing you with beautiful photos to utilize in many areas of your business, but also walking you through the ways you can start sharing value along with your service or product. If that’s the kind of thing that makes you feel all kinds of relieved and safe, I’ll cheers to that! What can I help you with today?
What does that quote make you think of? . This has had me mulling since this past Sunday’s homily. Both humility and humiliation have an undertone of lowering one’s pride. Yet, to me, humility is rooted in understanding one’s value and pushing that outward in service. Humiliation is a decision to internalize outward circumstances and allow those to affect our opinions of ourselves. Belief is so critical to behavior..and I felt compelled to share this to hopefully help one of you reframe your thinking about a “negative” happening right now in your life. . Do you have a situation that you’ve dealt with that could have been seen a different way? Tell me about it in the comments!
Hello beautiful people! It seemed about time for another introduction post to welcome all you newbies, and see whether I can surprise those who've been around a while. Back-to-school-themed, because September will always remind me of that big transition! . I’m Katherine, a personal branding photographer from Costa Mesa, CA. In high school, I was an art and AP nerd madly in love with English class, I was proudest of getting into Notre Dame, most embarrassed by my love of handbells, and Friday night you were sure to find me at Metro Pointe shopping and catching a movie with friends. I wasn’t perfect, but I definitely learned kindness left you with way more friends than enemies, and that’s a lesson I still treasure to this day. What were you like in high school?
Who inspires you? Today I’m tipping my hat to all the dreamers out there, whether in a window office or a home office, taking action to make those dreams reality, every single step at a time! You inspire me to keep pursuing this labor of LOVE! In honor of all the workers out there, who inspires you today?
Let’s get to know each other better, as long as you promise that what I’m about to tell you will not leave this post, okay? Here goes…I despise horror movies so much that I refused to see Shutter Island in the theater, thinking it was definitely going to make me scream. I know, I know – all I needed to do was watch the trailer, but I wouldn’t even do that. Trust me, running a business is scary enough – I don’t need that in my relaxation time! What kind of movies are your fave? Tell me below!

When was the last time you wrote a handwritten letter? Personally, I wrote a few last month, for friends and for clients. It really is a dying art, and I love being able to be creative in how my words are written. How about you, do you still use snail mail?
The summer I first traveled to Europe you couldn’t turn on the radio without hearing “Waka Waka” by Shakira. It played on repeat when Spain won the World Cup, and we all just danced like maniacs! To this day, when I hear it, I can’t help but feel a pull toward a plane and a new chance for a dance party. . These days I’m listening to “I Believe” by the Jonas Brothers (I wasn’t a fan in my teens, so I can say now this new album is good for summer!) and years from now, it’ll make me think of the tribe of giving, amazing entrepreneurs I was able to shoot at the beginning stages of my business. What’s your song this summer?
