Walking into 2019 like —— I am ready

So there’s always been something about me that longed to know the origin of things & how they came to be. My family’s ancestry has been at the top of that list. For 21 years of my life, I sought out connections to the continent of Africa in hopes of finding more of me. I can honestly say that never in my life did I think I’d get some clarity on this. This is something that I spent nights wondering about, poems created out of, and even studied abroad looking for SOMETHING, anything that would connect with me a piece of my heritage. Thankful for people who listen & who love me enough to attempt to understand that empty feeling I get because I don’t have the privilege of knowing my family’s culture beyond the United States. The enslavement of African people and imperialism took away hope of Black Americans finding their “link” to the continent. However, this gift is nothing short of being special & so meaningful to me in every way. This isn’t the end of my journey, only the beginning of finding out where it all started. ~one of the best gifts I have ever received.

A gift that keeps on giving~🥰

We’re a long way from Lafayette!

I’m so glad I get the opportunity to be your friend, to watch you grow, to watch you teach, to watch you love. My pal turned sorority sister. You’ve been the same driven & feisty woman I met freshman year. You’ve never been afraid to say what’s on your heart & to believe in yourself! This friendship is not for only 4 years, this is FOR LIFE. Ms. Alanis, you’re gonna be one of the best educators Milwaukee has ever seen!

*me when I convince myself that I can belt out a chorus by Jeremy Passion & I actually sound good until I lower the volume on my headphones* ~ This photo is for my chosen family. The people who make me laugh until my stomach hurts & smile the biggest. It’s so easy to get wrapped up in every day life & forget to laugh. Sometimes I forget that laughter keeps me going, it keeps my heart hopeful, and let’s me release all the things weighing on my spirit. Never stop laughing! ✨
