This is the final photo from my January trip to Death Valley. After spending the morning exploring some nearby salt flats, nothing really peaked my interest, so I returned to the location I photographed the day before, and found a more intimate composition of this mud flow. This photo was taken just as the sun was dropping behind the mountains at sunset, but it was passing through a thin layer of clouds, and that helped to soften the otherwise harsh light. This was taken on @fujifilm_profilm Provia 100F using my @arcaswissusa F Metric 8x10 and a Nikkor 450mm lens. . . . . . . . . . . . . #tagitplanetearth #landscapelover #filmisnotdead #believeinfilm #largeformat #8x10 #provia100f #ishootfujifilm #landscape_lover #igshotz @igshots #worldplaces #travelandlife #TheBest_Capture #landscape_captures #pixel_ig #keepitwild #leaveitbetter @deathvalleynps #deathvalley #earthfocus #naturephotography #master_shots #epic_captures #beautyofnature #roamtheplanet #earthpix #getlost

I took this photo on day 7 of my January trip to Death Valley. It all started with a VERY early morning drive 40 miles south of the Badwater basin. It was a few hours before sunrise, and I was on a mission. You see, the day before, I was taking some photos of @wildernessinfluencer on the side of the road. By the end of the day I realized I lost one of his hands. That’s right folks, I got up several hours before sunrise so I could retrace my steps along the side of the road in search for a tiny plastic hand that fell off my dol.... *clears throat* action figure. I searched two areas by headlamp, but couldn’t find his dainty little man hand. I felt a bit let down, then started driving north again along Badwater road. It was then that I noticed some clouds in the night sky, and figured there might be some interesting light on the Panamint range at sunrise. I stopped on the side of the road, and set up this composition in the dark. I hung out there all through sunrise, and there was a brief moment when some warm direct sunlight illuminated the mountains. This photo was taken on @fujifilm_profilm Provia 100F 8x10 film using my @arcaswissusa F Metric 8x10 with a Nikkor 450mm lens. . . . . . . . . . #tagitplanetearth #landscapelover #filmisnotdead #believeinfilm #largeformat #8x10 #provia100f #ishootfujifilm #landscape_lover #igshotz @igshots #worldplaces #travelandlife #TheBest_Capture #landscape_captures #pixel_ig #keepitwild #leaveitbetter @deathvalleynps #deathvalley #earthfocus #naturephotography #master_shots #epic_captures #beautyofnature #roamtheplanet #earthpix #getlost

My Day 7 video from my January trip to Death Valley goes live this Saturday on my Youtube Channel. This still-frame from the video gives a feel for how vast Death Valley really is. You can walk for miles and miles, yet somehow feel like you are exactly where you started. I will be heading out again in the next several weeks to the canyons of southern Utah. I look forward to pointing my camera at interesting things, and getting passed by that pesky Prius. . . . #tagitplanetearth @wildernessinfluencer

I took this photo on day 6 of my January trip to Death Valley and Zion National Park. I spent much of the day exploring new locations in hopes of finding some interesting subjects. It was great to do some exploring, though I didn’t find anything especially noteworthy. Later that day, I drove to this particular location. I arrived in the early afternoon, found my composition, then waited for some nice light after sunset. This was taken on Fuji Provia 100F film with my Arca-Swiss F Metric 8x10 camera using a Nikkor 150mm SW lens. . . . . . . . #tagitplanetearth #landscapelover #filmisnotdead #believeinfilm #largeformat #8x10 #provia100f #ishootfujifilm #landscape_lover #igshotz @igshots #worldplaces #travelandlife #TheBest_Capture #landscape_captures #pixel_ig #keepitwild #leaveitbetter @deathvalleynps #deathvalley #earthfocus #naturephotography #master_shots #epic_captures #beautyofnature #roamtheplanet #earthpix #getlost @fujifilm_profilm

My day 6 from my winter trip goes live this Saturday on my Youtube Channel. In that video I return to Death Valley, and find yet another mylar balloon. I collected about 8 of them on my recent trip, all of which traveled enormous distances before eventually coming to rest in the wilderness of the Mojave Desert. I looked on a map, and these balloons might have traveled from as far as Bakersfield, or perhaps even the Los Angeles area. I collected all the balloons, and plan on using them in a project designed to raise awareness of this flying trash. Please do your part, and never release mylar balloons. Dispose of them properly, or never buy them in the first place. Oh, and I also exposed some 8x10 film in that video. 🤩#leaveitbetter #tagitplanetearth

I found this scene while wandering along a creek on a chilly evening in Zion National Park this past January. This section of ice had melted and re-frozen on several occasions, resulting in some very interesting formations. I took this photo on Fuji Provia 100F film with my @arcaswissusa F Metric 8x10 using my Nikkor 300mm 5.6 lens with overextended bellows to achieve this closeup image. This is one of the few images where I depended on a loupe for fine focus. It would have been difficult to set the front tilt and the focus without it. I used a Wista 5x loupe. . . . . . . #tagitplanetearth #landscapelover #filmisnotdead #believeinfilm #largeformat #8x10 #provia100f #ishootfujifilm #landscape_lover #igshotz @igshots #worldplaces #travelandlife #TheBest_Capture #landscape_captures #pixel_ig #keepitwild #leaveitbetter #zion #utah #earthfocus #naturephotography #master_shots #epic_captures #beautyofnature #roamtheplanet #earthpix #getlost @fujifilm_profilm

My next video from my Winter trip to Zion goes live this Saturday. It was a very interesting day, and I spent a lot of time exploring Zion’s icy washes. I look forward to sharing the video, and the photo I managed to capture that day. #tagitplanetearth #believeinfilm #largeformat #8x10

I took this photo on day 4 of my January trip to Zion National Park. Freezing overnight temperatures left some wonderful ice. The water in the upper left hand corner is flowing, but the mud ripples and the smaller pools of water are both frozen solid. The strong orange glow is compliments of the morning sun reflecting off some nearby towering sandstone cliffs. This was taken on Fuji Velvia 50 8x10 film with my @arcaswissusa F Metric 8x10 using a Nikkor 450mm lens. . . . . . . #tagitplanetearth #landscapelover #filmisnotdead #believeinfilm #largeformat #8x10 #velvia50 #ishootfujifilm #landscape_lover #igshotz @igshots #worldplaces #travelandlife #TheBest_Capture #landscape_captures #pixel_ig #keepitwild #leaveitbetter #zion #utah #earthfocus #naturephotography #master_shots #epic_captures #beautyofnature #roamtheplanet #earthpix #getlost @fujifilm_profilm

My day 4 video from my winter trip to Zion goes live this Saturday. I think you guys will really enjoy this one because it kicks off the extremely productive second half of my trip. The conditions were ideal, and I found some great subjects to work with. On another note, if you frequently shoot long exposures on film and aren’t already using an analog stopwatch, you should really give it a try. I love how the motion of using a cable release is the same as using a stopwatch. It is very easy on the brain. This stopwatch is made by Minerva, and I purchased it off eBay.

I shot this photo on day 3 of my January trip to Zion National Park. Just over 3 inches of snow fell in the main canyon only two days before my arrival, and it was still quite fresh in some of the shadowed parts of the canyon. The first time I photographed this tree was on my winter trip last year, but there was no snow in that photo. It was very interesting to see this same scene but with some nice snow. This was taken on Kodak Ektar 100 color negative film with my Arca Swiss 8x10 and a Nikkor 300mm lens. . . . . #tagitplanetearth #landscapelover #filmisnotdead #believeinfilm #largeformat #8x10 #kodakektar100 #landscape_lover #igshotz @igshots #worldplaces #travelandlife #TheBest_Capture #landscape_captures #pixel_ig #keepitwild #leaveitbetter #earthfocus #naturephotography #master_shots #epic_captures #beautyofnature #roamtheplanet #earthpix #getlost

My next video journal from my winter 2019 trip goes live on Saturday. I got an early start and drove from Death Valley to Zion for a change of scenery. In many ways, I felt like I was giving up on Death Valley too soon, but the strong wind was difficult to work with, and the conditions were far more ideal in Zion. In years past I might have just stuck it out in Death Valley, but that isn’t always the best move. I think it is best to be both patient AND flexible. @arcaswissusa #largeformat #8x10 #believeinfilm

Working with large format has taught me a sense of patience. My approach is to find an interesting subject, determine when the light will be best, select a composition, then wait for the good light. I’ve learned a lot by this approach, and it seldom lets me down. On this particular day, I was wandering through a dune field at mid-day when I found this rock. I studied the scene for a composition, and figured it would look decent after sunset. I hiked back to my truck, got my camera, then set up a composition and waited several hours until the light was best a half hour after sunset. Thankfully the wind cooperated and stayed calm while I made this long exposure on Fuji Provia 100F with my Arca Swiss F Metric 8x10 and my Nikkor 300mm 5.6 lens. . . . . . . . #tagitplanetearth #landscapelover #filmisnotdead #believeinfilm #largeformat #8x10 #provia100f #ishootfujifilm #landscape_lover #igshotz @igshots #worldplaces #travelandlife #TheBest_Capture #landscape_captures #pixel_ig #keepitwild #leaveitbetter @deathvalleynps #earthfocus #naturephotography #master_shots #epic_captures #beautyofnature #roamtheplanet #earthpix #getlost @fujifilm_profilm

I shot this photo on day 2 of my January trip to Death Valley. I positioned my camera here the day before, then secured it to the ground with an 18” metal ground screw and some very strong cord. I slept in the back of my truck that night, and I could feel my 4Runner getting rocked in the wind. Thankfully my camera survived the night just fine. While setting up this composition, I had no clue that the moon would be in my shot. It was a complete surprise the next morning when I watched it slide right into the composition. This was taken on Fuji Provia 100F 8x10 with my Arca Swiss F Metric 8x10 and a Fuji 240mm A lens. . . . . . . #tagitplanetearth #landscapelover #filmisnotdead #believeinfilm #largeformat #8x10 #provia100f #ishootfujifilm #landscape_lover #igshotz @igshots #worldplaces #travelandlife #TheBest_Capture #landscape_captures #pixel_ig #keepitwild #leaveitbetter #deathvalley @deathvalleynps #earthfocus #naturephotography #master_shots #epic_captures #beautyofnature #roamtheplanet #earthpix #getlost @fujifilm_profilm

I just posted a first look video of the new @intrepidcamera second generation 8x10 camera over on my YouTube Channel. There have been a lot of changes, including a new focusing mechanism, a much stronger front standard, captive knobs, and the ability to store the camera with rear standard oriented either horizontal or vertical. I will post a full review after I have taken it into the field on my spring backpacking trip.

My first video journal from my January trip to Death Valley goes line this Saturday on my YouTube Channel. It was a very interesting trip, and I managed to shoot quite a few images that I am very proud of. You might notice that some of the videos in this series are longer than usual. I included some long-form clips in several key places to give a better sense of being there. I look forward to sharing the results from the trip!

This is a photo I shot way back in 2009. This was taken on 4x5 Fuji Velvia 100 with a Toyo 45AII camera and a Nikkor 75mm wide angle lens. This is one of the very few local photos I have taken. I seldom shoot seascapes because they can be quite frustrating with large format. The coast is often crowded with people, and large format cameras attract a lot of attention. I end up with a constant stream of people asking if I am shooting a Hasselblad. No joke. When you combine that with trying to get a proper exposure, time the waves perfectly, and not really having any place to set down my equipment (film holders, light meter, etc), it is a minor miracle when a photo turns out. I really do want to shoot more local stuff, but probably not along the coast. . . . . . . . . . #tagitplanetearth #landscapelover #filmisnotdead #believeinfilm #largeformat #4x5 #velvia100 #ishootfujifilm #landscape_lover #igshotz @igshots #worldplaces #travelandlife #TheBest_Capture #landscape_captures #pixel_ig #keepitwild #leaveitbetter #earthfocus #naturephotography #master_shots #epic_captures #beautyofnature #roamtheplanet #earthpix #getlost @fujifilm_profilm

My Youtube video this Wednesday is all about my 4Runner, and how I configure the interior for my photo trips. I often live out of my truck for a week or two at a time, which means carrying food, water, camera gear, and film, all while being able to sleep in the back and keep all my video batteries charged. I really enjoy the process of getting everything ready for a photography trip, and this video will show you my process.

With all the snow that fell in Zion on Monday, I decided to drive from Death Valley to Zion to make use of the conditions. This is a scene I photographed this morning. The mud ripples and the water are all frozen, and I had a long lasting glow compliments of a nearby sandstone cliff. So far on this trip, I have photographed two scenes in Death Valley, and three scenes here in Zion. I will definitely swing by Death Valley again later in this trip, but snow and ice in Zion is too good to pass up.
