Giant tortoises are only found on two groups of tropical islands: the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador and the Aldabra Atoll and Fregate Island in Seychelles.

With their huge bodies and shells adult tortoises can weigh over 250kg and are so big that their head and legs cannot be completely withdrawn into their shells. This wasn’t a problem for Aldabra giant tortoises as there are no natural predators on the islands, so the shell does not need to serve as protection. In fact it was not until people arrived on the islands, that they almost became extinct.

In the past tortoises were hunted en masse and stored for meat by sailors in ships holds, wiping out nearly all of them in less than 100 years. The previously isolated populations faced further issues from new predators being introduced, such as rats and cats and increased competition for food from goats.

The atoll has now been protected from human influence and thanks to captive breeding programmes, is home to the world's largest population of giant tortoises which is around 100,000.

Giant tortoises are among the world’s longest-lived animals, known to live over 100 years. Some individual Aldabra giant tortoises are thought to be over 200 years of age; unfortunately however there are very few accurate records to verify this, mainly due to the tortoises outliving their human observers.

@bookhopper the smaller ones at the top are Sand Plovers, the slightly bigger birds are Great Knots. Down in the bottom left are a couple of Terns. But in the same flock were Tattlers, Godwits, Greenshanks, Ruddy Turnstones, Curlews and more...
