Sometimes happiness is a summer breeze falling upon one’s shoulders.
.
I was sitting in my window, rereading couple of pages in Thomas Wolfe’s Look Homeward, Angel. A family fight was going on - in the book, fortunately: bitter hatred welling up between brothers. Not unlike a forest fire (everybody who’s ever been in a family fight - and who hasn't? -, knows what i mean). But then, suddenly, sadness falls upon the family brawlers:
.
“Their faces were sad. There was great age in them. They felt suddenly the distance they had come and the amount they had lived. They had a moment of cohesion, a moment of tragic affection and union, which drew them together like small jets of flame against all the senseless nihilism of life.”
.
Brothers, sisters (like the ones in the painting above by Jerry Weiss, maybe?), (old) friends, (ex-)lovers will recognize these moments of rare beauty and unity. “We have walked this path, we belong together.” Kindred spirits. Soul-mates. A bond surviving the bitterest fight.
.
Then it happened.
.
My window open, canal voices in a boat passing by, evaporating in the damp summer sky; the rain's scent and the ecstasy of evening in the air. But most of all: the ravishing andante movement of Mozart’s 21st piano concerto suddenly reaching my ear, from below somewhere - the 60s version with Ingrid Haebler (she must be 90 something now) at the piano. Sweeping me off my feet.
.
A flower is named after her, the Ingrid Haebler tulip. It's almost too good to be true.
.
Happiness. That's all it takes, apparently: a window, the evening, family brawls and soul bonds. The rain's scent. Not to forget the piano.
.
(Btw - more brawls, and bonds, in The Longing - episode 10, on our blog today.)
