📚#BOOKS📚 #booksbrunchbotanica #Repost @jensorianowrites • • • • • Insurrecto by Gina Apostol. In 1901, Filipino revolutionaries in Balangiga, Samar pulled off the most successful uprising against a US colonial army since the Lakota, Cheyenne and Arapaho victory at the 1876 Battle of Little Bighorn. US forces retaliated with a massacre in which General Jacob Smith ordered his troops to “kill everyone over ten.” Apostol imagines the details of not the massacre but the masterminding behind the victorious uprising. She does this through the ingenious use of two current day protagonists, one a filmmaker and one a translator, who write conflicting scripts about the event. The result is a surprisingly hilarious ride that takes the reader through an experience of almost joyful colonial subversion. If you’re a writer, the craft of this book might just blow your mind. If you’re a reader, you’ll appreciate Apostol’s fresh voice and her ability to bring humor along with depth to such a heavy—and erased—moment in history. . . . #insurrecto #ginaapostol #PinayWriters #allpinayeverything #womenofcolor #WoCbooks #fiction #bookstagram #writersofinstagram #feminism #amreading #bookstagrammer #binder #samar #balangiga #newfiction #novels #balangiga #bellsofbalangiga #howlingwilderness #geronima #colonization #uprisingnotinsurrection #revolutionaries #historicalfiction

Balangiga townsfolk dressed as American soldiers during the Fil-American war in a re-enactment of the events in 1901 that led to General Jacob Smith’s order to turn the province of Samar into a “Howling Wilderness” and that any Filipino male capable of bearing arms during that time be shot and killed. In the wake of the attacks, the church bells of Balangiga was taken by US soldiers as war trophies. The US secretary of defense has recently announced the return of the bells to the Philippines. #philippines #photojournalism #balangiga #conflict #bells #soldierboy #howlingwilderness #everydayphilippines #everydayeverywere #nytimes Photo by Jes Aznar @jeszmann on @everydayphilippines
