Hi! This is Stefan Irvine (@stefan.irvine), and I am taking over Blue Lotus Gallery’s Instagram this week. If you are interested to learn more about this project, RECONSTRUCT is currently being exhibited until 15th September at Blue Lotus Gallery (28 Pound Lane, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong). “Waterloo Road, Yau Ma Tei” (2017) is one of the photographs from “The Last Tong Lau” series, produced in collaboration with Jörg Dietrich. Built in 1964, Wah Tak Building in Yau Ma Tei, Kowloon is a mostly residential building with an almost perfectly square facade fronting Waterloo Road. Sitting directly opposite the century-old Yau Ma Tei Wholesale Fruit market, which operates throughout the night, this building is an example of a post-war composite building, with shops and businesses on the ground floor, and 17 floors of residential accommodation above. For this subject, I decided to reshoot the building again on a second day, as the lighting and weather were disappointing after the first shoot. Such architectural photography takes time and a lot of patience.

This series of composite panoramas are photographed from multiple perspectives and then stitched together digitally to create a unique projection of an entire city block. With this project, I hope to document and celebrate Hong Kong’s rich architectural heritage which is rapidly disappearing.
