Located at the top of Dexter Avenue, the Montgomery capital building is one of the most beautiful spots. The building itself has seen so much history throughout the years, including the Selma to Montgomery 1965 Voting Rights March. It is definitely steeped in history! #myMGM

We've still got a lot of progress to make on the LGBT front... Thankfully there are some truly kind souls in the world that are doing their best to help heal the generational wounds of hate.

happy father's day. here is marlon brando with his father, marlon brando sr. during an interview with edward r. marrow, april 1, 1955.

the relationship between brando and his father was nevertheless a tragic one with marlon having stated in the past: “i was his namesake, but nothing i did ever pleased or even interested him. he enjoyed telling me i couldn't do anything right. he had a habit of telling me i would never amount to anything.”

Malcolm in Rochester, New York on February 16, 1965. He concluded his hour-long address at the Corn Hill Methodist Episcopal Church by stating that his new group, the Organization of Afro-American Unity sought to "make the world see that our problem was no longer a Negro problem or an American problem but a human problem. A problem for humanity, and a problem which should be attacked by all elements of humanity. A problem that was so complex that it was impossible for Uncle Sam to solve it himself, and therefore we want to get into a body or conference with people who are in such positions that they can help us get some kind of adjustment for this situation before it gets so explosive that no one can handle it."

These words yearly shared. "The Texas sun has kissed my face. Muddy waters run through my veins. My people come from the Bayou. Cajun/Creole is not just in my food and last name, but it is in me. I am the generations of family members who have lived off the Louisiana land for decades. I am the Irish side of my family much care not to remember because it means we were slaves in Rural Mississippi/Arkansas. I am a descendant of the great Virginia Colonel George Waller. I am Ann Eliza Walters. The girl in my family who passed as white and therefore escaped slavery to marry in North Carolina. And eventually lived in Texas as a "white woman." I am my Momma crying while watching "The Help" because it is her life story since she was named after the last child my Great Grandma raised for the "White Doctor" in town. I am my aunt walking down the streets of Greenville Mississippi hand in hand with my Momma and Grandma as the camera crews film her being the first black student to integrate her elementary school. I am my Father enduring Southern Louisiana summers as he worked the Oil Rigs on the Bayou so that he could pay for college. I am my Uncle Jeff who grew up picking cotton. I am my Paw Paw who rode on the back of the Ice Truck in the 1940's as an Ice Pick Boy delivering the contents to the families in Northern Mississippi. I am my Great Grandpa who left Mississippi to live in Rural Arkansas and be a sharecropper and provide for his family. I am my Grandma who left her home as a child in Rural Arkansas to attend school in Mississippi because the education system was better for black children. I am my Great Grandma's and their Choctaw and Cherokee heritage. I am the strong woman they raised me to be. I am the red dirt that stains my car as I drive the backboards. I am my Uncle piloting planes throughout the south as he sprayed the crops with Pesticides. I am my Uncle Jarvis as he proudly defended his country. I am my Uncle Dan who only works six months of the year driving trucks so that he is always home in the fall for hunting season. Texas raised me, but the South made me.” Happy #juneteenth, Y’all!

The story of America is one of progress and pursuit of a more perfect union. Today, 154 years later, we commemorate the flashpoint of that progress — the day that the truth of our equality finally began to extend to ALL of those whom we had long held in bondage. Although Lincoln’s #EmancipationProclamation had been signed into affect almost a year a half prior, its words were not honored in Texas until soldiers arrived to enforce the laws on June 19, 1864. This day, widely know as #Juneteenth, is how we recognize the abolition of our original sin; one that capitulated our country into a history of struggle in the fight for #LibertyandJusticeFORALL Every movement that sought and still seeks the advancement of American civil rights is rooted in the legacy of Juneteenth. We pay tribute to the most important lesson in our history by, #together ,continuing our march toward a better America! 📸: @Newsweek

#juneoughtaknow that #Juneteenth is a celebration of the end of the enslavement of people, but this reminder on an #MBTA bus reminds us that far too many Americans have known second class status, have been demoted and demeaned, had their bodies broken and burned in the name of white supremacy. How potent was Rosa Parks’ decision to promote her rightful place on a public bus—wherever she wanted to sit. That by sitting she took a mighty stand; by staying put, she became part of a ferocious movement toward equal rights. I am a woman who loves public transportation. I think our cities are better when we use it and embrace the unexpected equalizing power of strangers going places together. Happy Juneteenth, America. Let’s continue to embrace freedom for all. What a beautiful, complicated ride we’re on together.

#repost from @nmaahc 💕 Happy #juneteenth to not just African Americans but to everyone in America. It’s a part of all of our history & should be celebrated as such.
———————————————————
“ #Onthisday in 1865, enslaved African Americans were notified of their freedom by Union troops in Galveston, TX—two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

Known as #Juneteenth, this day is widely celebrated as the end of chattel slavery in the U.S. Juneteenth marks our country’s second independence day. Though it has long been celebrated among the African American community, it is a history that has been marginalized and still remains largely unknown to the wider public. The legacy of Juneteenth shows the value of deep hope and urgent organizing in uncertain times. This Museum is a community space where that spirit can continue to live on – where histories like this one can surface, and new stories with equal urgency can be told. #APeoplesJourney #ANationsStory

#longcaption #pleaseread Let’s unpack this, while I wouldn’t use these word I know the point this organization was trying to make... in a lot of ways bad behavior has been subsidized in our community in the name of “Civil Rights” and accountability as well as holding our selves to a worthwhile standard is at an all time low. However Civil Rights are human rights and cannot be blamed for our downfall that falls squarely on us. it’s medicine and sometimes we not babes anymore so it’s not grape 🍇 and bubblegum flavored... this medicine is bitter and hard to swallow but we need it to make ourselves better, to make ourselves accountable and so we can improve our individual situations as well as our community. #blackcommunity #civilrights

What good is a society that can't recognize the truth of its past and fulfill the obligations of the present? The institutions of power and wealth in the US are built and entrenched along the racial divide of slavery. While slavery as law is over, the violent systematic oppression of black communities continues. Supporting reparations is a crucial step in recognizing and redistributing our wicked inheritance.

"Yes, police really are stealing from black communities by way of discriminatory tickets. Yes, much of the conservative push to enact more restrictive voting laws is intended to dilute black voting power. Those linkages are empowering in a way, cutting through decades of gaslighting and disbelief. And they all point to the potential utility of reparations, not just as a way to address the legacy of slavery, but as the only way to reckon with the caste system that America allowed to be built as it looked the other way after slavery’s end."

He spoke in a simple and blunt way for all the stupid idiots who say on a regular basic how do we know that our ancestors were enslaved here and not abroud 😆 or the ones that say "slavery was soooo long ago" should be able to understand. 😒 It's astounding how many delusional Black idiots and racist non Blacks ignore the impact of slavery and the century of terrorism, oppression and genocide that followed emancipation. #juneteenth #AfroAmerican #blackhistory #reparations #lineagematters #ancestors #blackfamily #slaveryinamerica #slavery #ados #blackamerican #jimcrow #blackcodes #codenoir #reconstruction #civilrights #systemicoppression

“On Juneteenth, we celebrate our capacity to make real the promise of our founding, that thing inside each of us that says America is not yet finished, that compels all of us to fight for justice and equality until this country we love more closely aligns with our highest ideals.” —Barack Obama ❤️🖤💚💛

I am so mad about it! What kind of fucking double standards is this? As a Clevelander mysef, each time I see shit like this I remeber about #TamirRice. And I'd be damned if I see that his toy gun looked real in the comments one more time. The caller repeated several times that the gun could be fake. If it was a white boy, cops would do everything possible to arrest him alive, they wouldn't probably even come there. The caller wouldn't probably even call. SMH.

The latest batch of stickers are in and they came out perfect! Did you know there are two versions of Sojourner Truth's On Women's Rights (Ar'n't I a Woman) speech?
Sojourner Truth's orginal speach was delivered at the Woman's Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio in 1851.The commonly known, An'r't I a Women, version was rewritten in the Southern slave dialect by Frances Gage in 1863.

This portrait of Sojourner is made with the words from the 1851 version. To find out more about the speeches and their differences please visit: thesojournertruthproject.com

Great speech on why reparations  #reperations  #40acresandamule  #civilrights

The popular narrative of "non-violence" and "equality" around the Civil Rights movement perpetuates the popular perceptions that minority violence is pathological (while undermining the brutality suffered by the demonstrators while simultaneously painting state and white violence is more aceptable) and that the Civil Rights movement was an end-all-be-all episode in leveling the unfair playing field that is the white power structure.

The movement that King represents adopted nonviolence because nonviolence was pragmatic in any number of ways, the least of which was limited ownership of forearms amongst African American people in the South compared to White gun ownership rates (and preparedness to use them). It's important to recall that as Civil Rights demonstrators waived their own claim to violent means to achieve their legal equality, they were entirely aware that the success of their movement hinged on the severity of violence against the people of the movement - the more violent conservative Southern Whites were in defense of segregation, the more sympathetic the country became to the specific plight of the Southern Black that was Jim Crow. Why does our history highlight and glorify the fact that African Americans didnt hit back so much more than that White people started hitting first and have hardly stopped?

When asked about the legacy of the Civil Rights movement in a '67 or '68 interview, Dr. King mentioned that the Civil Rights movement was a struggle for "decency," and pointed out that we are now in a struggle for "equality." Regardless of what "equality" means to you, that man recognized that their ia more to a racist power structure than overtly violent and nasty White people, and that there is more to equality than what is written on part. That second era of struggle he described is still very much alive: Emancipation didnt end it, Civil Rights legislation didnt end it, Obama sure as hell didnt end it.

Dont be selective in your support in the face of what is clearly wrong. Dr. King knew what was up. Why don't you?

FREEDOM AINT FREE💪🏾
What’s the science? It’s ya guy HoodCredit Eric. History ain’t a mystery. 154 yrs ago today history was made. A people and a country began the long march across time to freedom. A journey we are still embarking on today. A journey through slave codes, Jim Crow, segregation, redlining, mass incarceration and a host of other ports on long road to freedom. Physical bondage is alive and well but the vast amount of people in mental bondage is at a crisis level. Are you living your best life? Open your heart and free your mind. Unleash and increase your creativity, positivity, possibility and profitability. Do the knowledge today and everyday. Are you living your best life? Everyday is “Freedom Day.” Renew yourself. Upgrade your life. I implore you, please remember the ancestors that fought and died in order us to have a chance at greatness. We are consecrated in the blood of our revolutionized predecessors. Never forget, always remember. You must utilize forbearance, resilience and discernment to breakout of our your mental prison💪🏾
I thank you for your time and patience. I love you and I pray the power of love guides you in all your decisions.

#reflecting this Juneteenth 🙏🏾 By pure chance, we shot my #helengeorgia office scenes in the #TheChristmasCard right next to the historical #nachoochee slave dwelling. 😌. It is one of the “few slave dwellings to survive in #Georgia”. 😑 ...Yeah, still don’t know how I feel about that. 😶

I was so blown & honestly humbled, I had to take a few moments to just SIT DOWN & honor & reflect on those who were enslaved 🤯, who were part of the longggggg road to where we are now. My ability to be an #actor, #lawyer, & whatever else I CHOOSE to be was on their backs. 🙏🏾 I don’t know if anyone of them were still hanging around but I did my part to let them know that we still got a ways to go but we come a lonngggggg way. If y’all have a moment, please read the signs. It’ll break your heart. 😤😫. Thank you to @daniknowsmakeup for the pictures as well as giving me that space to reflect 😘

Happy Juneteenth! It's when hen the last slaves in Texas learned they were free. It brings to the forefront the centuries-old debate, how can descendants of slaves be made whole?
Steps away from the U.S. Capitol – a building built by slaves – the House Judiciary subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties held its first hearing in more than a decade on the hot-button topic of reparations for the descendants of Africans brought to America, enslaved and impacted by discriminatory policies including segregation, Jim Crow laws, Red lining, predatory loans, gerrymandering.

I know the basics of this holiday. I know it’s about freeing slaves. I know I don’t hear any fireworks, but I know it should be celebrated. Post coming soon about I can find about Juneteenth and how we can celebrate it! For now, HAPPY JUNETEENTH! 💙 • • •  #juneteenth  #happyjuneteenth  #blackholiday  #slavery  #blackindependenceday  #fortheculture  #blog  #lifestyleblog  #blackblogger  #melaninblogger  #bloggersofcolor  #blackfemaleblogger  #browngirlbloggers  #activism  #civilrights  #civilrightsactivist  #racismisreal  #blackgirlmagic  #blacklivesmatter

Today is #Juneteenth, the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of #slavery in the United States.
.
Today, the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties is holding a hearing on #reparations for Black Americans.
.
Today, we ask: has our nation kept its promises to the victims - and descendants - of chattel slavery? Are we any closer to paying back America's debts? On our #BHeard Town Hall, Reparations Now?, we asked our panel these crucial questions.

If you want to learn about #juneteenth , many Black individuals have posts and articles that have a more complete background and a relevant tie to the subject. I encourage you to seek it out, but here is my opinion as well:

Juneteenth is one of the perfect examples of something to celebrate, but more importantly that it is not enough by itself. A little more than 150 years ago, the Emancipation Proclamation was officiated in the USA, but every - single - decade since has bred new or expanded problems that face the descendants of African slaves forcefully brought here, and the people of color who live here despite their lineage. THAT is why, the longer reparations have been delayed, the more broad the answer becomes as to what it relevantly constitutes regarding US history.

At the very least, educate yourself on the subject, and on the terrifyingly long time of civil rights struggles (it was not just the 60s). If you want to do better than that, since there has been no official legal reparations, seek out some Black-Owned businesses and buy some of their services. You may find a brand that you love and trust, made in the USA, given politics involved or not.
Have a good one, everyone.

LEGACY. Whαt is yours?

Founder @donnelldarice tells you ours. And you wonder why we’re womanists and activists? **** Quoting the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., she said, “There will come a day when black children and white children, children of all hues and religions, will play together. That day has come!"” “She said her father, "a Baptist minister for 50 years," would have said, "'Donnellda, God spoke to me. Weeping may endure for a night. I've known some nights now. I knew a night in 1963, Dec. 23, when a church, a beautiful edifice, was in shambles and ashes. But, you know what? Joy comes in the morning. We will progress from this place and be hosted by the stunning edifices that replaced those dark nights. This is a moment where the prophecy is fulfilled. There are big moments and small moments, but this one is so important. I tell you that joy, unspeakable joy, is here."” #purposefounders #hertalk #wcw #hotspringsarkansas #civilrights #womenempowerment #equality #juneteenth #activism

Every 5 days, an #Arizona officer shoots someone, a Republic analysis finds
In 2018, #policeshootings hit record levels in #Phoenix. The trend extends statewide and stretches beyond a single year. Story by Uriel J. Garcia and Bree Burkitt, #ArizonaRepublic. https://bit.ly/2J7Jfjd

In hundreds of cases, the people shot were armed with a #gun or a #knife. Others were armed with nontraditional weapons such as a sword, hockey stick or machete, The Republic found. "#Officers are getting away with #shooting people that really don't have deadly weapons in their hands. Because they're making the excuse of they're feeling threatened." #BenjaminTaylor, a #Phoenixlawyer who has represented people who have claimed #policebrutality, pointed out that Arizona is an open-carry state, which allows people to carry a gun in plain sight and without a permit. He said just because a person has a gun doesn't automatically give officers leeway to use deadly force.
But, he said, he understands the #lethal threat of a gun. What he doesn't understand are cases in which police have claimed being threatened by less dangerous objects. @ArizonaRepublic @azcentral #breaking #taylorgomezlaw #attorneybenjamintaylor #phx #phoenixpd #phoenixpolice #lawyer #stoppolicebrutality #az #news #policeofficer #knowyourrights #civilrights #criminaldefense #personalinjury #law #officerinvolvedshooting @taylorgomezllp

#Juneteenth seems especially important to celebrate this year, since the last slave ship, the Clotilda, was found so recently. And let us remember that we have a disgraceful sham of a “president” in office who actively disparages both African-Americans and Africa.

Happy Juneteeth everyone!
Today we commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States. Although the Emancipation Proclamation, signed by Abraham Lincoln that freed slaves in 1863 , it wasn’t until 1865 that the very last slaves were free in the state of Texas.

June 19,1865 is commemorated as Juneteenth. The ending of slavery in the United States. 2 years after the emancipation proclamation. Thank you to my nearest and dearest friend, @vurnt22 , who introduced me to this band @the1865band and album. Download it, listen to it, and remember this history, so it NEVER repeats itself.

...
There’s still a lot of progress to make but we are stronger and more capable of standing in freedom today than we have ever been and we thank our African American ancestors for their sacrifices to get us here.
...
If you aren’t of African decent but you love equality and freedom of all people then make sure you do your part to celebrate and send love to your black brothers and sisters today.✊🏾 And don’t forget to keep praying for Sudan!! They are still fighting for their freedom and so are many others across the globe!

✨Young Lords 🇵🇷✨
.
.
The Young Lords (formerly the Young Lords Organization (YLO) or Young Lords Party) is a civil and human rights organization transformed by the leadership of Jose Cha Cha Jimenez from a Chicago turf gang on September 23, 1968, 100 years after the Grito de Lares. The group's mission is to fight for neighborhood empowerment and self-determination of Puerto Ricans, Latinos, and colonized ("Third World") people.[1] Tactics used by the Young Lords include mass education, canvassing, community programs, occupations, and direct confrontation. The Young Lords were victims of the U.S. Government's COINTELPRO program.
.
.
In the party platform, America is spelled as "AmeriKKKa" to describe how they oppose the military occupation of Puerto Rico and show how white supremacy is rooted in America’s success. It followed the mission and clearly states, “We demand immediate withdrawal of U.S. military forces and bases from Puerto Rico, Vietnam, and all oppressed communities inside and outside the U.S. No Puerto Rican should serve in the U.S. army against his brothers and sisters, for the only true army of oppressed people is the people’s army to fight all rulers.”
