The post on barley lemon drink was most difficult for me as I felt the photographs weren’t good enough. Each time I picked up my camera, the styling would be different and I’d struggle to make it look the way I want it to.

What does it mean to cook Persian food in a time when the US is threatening war with Iran? How do we account for the food's trendiness in a time of travel bans on Iranian citizens? How do we reconcile the popularity of the 'Persian' in a time of animosity to the Iranian?

This is khoresh fesenjan from @bottomofthepot's book. Chicken simmered in a silky, rich pomegranate molasses and walnut sauce. It's delicious food. Comfort food.

In an article in The Atlantic (that you should all most definitely read; link in comments), Naz shares about "Writing an Iranian Cookbook in an Age of Anxiety". There, fesenjan is a marker of stability in a changing world, despite it also being fluid (or because of it...) and changing. Fesenjan also faces travel bans...

It's a powerful essay on loss and anxiety and family and place. It gives context to the food and the whole book beyond the brief headnotes of the recipes. It struggles with the above questions: in a world of anxiety for Iranians in the diaspora, what is the role of food?

And, these past weeks we've woken to more of that anxiety as Twitter and the TVs fill with threats of possible war.

How do we reconcile or come to understand a glossy spread on Persian food in the same New York Times fillled with news of war against Iran? How is the food celebrated while the country and the people demonized?

So many questions and the answers are not mine to write but, but as I sit down to this elegant plate of khoresh and rice I wanted to thank @bottomofthepot for her writing and thinking that connects the food to the people, the places, and the stories. Thank you.
