One is a classic autobiography set in the great depression, while the other is a novel set after the Marcos regime. What they have in common, however, is the Filipino pursuit for the American Dream — sought after by many across generations. 📚

Book number 12 for 2019.
It was love at first sight for me the moment I read its synopsis' first sentence: "How many lives fit in a lifetime?"
Heartbreaking without being sentimental, it constantly questions the concept of home and embraces loss as a building block of strength. The character Hero truly earned her name.

Our hearts hurt because of what happened in El Paso Texas, there is no need for this to be happening in America every few months! I can’t go anywhere without being paranoid about being shot, stabbed, or robbed in America it’s a constant feared. Those innocent people didn’t deserve to die that way. what is wrong with America? #elpaso #americaisshit #americaisnottheheart

These are my lofty August TBR goals! On top of this, I also need to finish The Goldfinch (about halfway through) and the audiobook of Lincoln in the Bardo! July was relatively successful for me, as I managed to read a book per week for an online class I’m taking, as well as four for-fun books! I’m trying to get through as many books as possible while I still have the free time this summer! What are you reading this August? Do you have any recommendations?

THIS BOOK. A thing of such astonishing wonder and beauty and searing pain I cannot bear to be done with it. I have not fallen so head over heels with a book like this in at least a decade. If you haven’t read it, what a treat is in store for you. I’m going to go hug it. #AmericaIsNotTheHeart #novel #ElaineCastillo #amreading

America Is Not the Heart by Elaine Castillo
As an immigrant coming to America as part of a vast diaspora, America might be a land of opportunity, but it can also be a land of lose and hardship. It's not of the heart. Not yet, maybe not ever. “America Is Not the Heart” by Elaine Castillo tells the story of Geronima "Hero" De Vera, born into a wealthy Filipino family. After only one year of medical school, to become a doctor like her beloved Tito Sol, she joins the New People's Army, in response to Marcos' dictatorship, spending the next ten years living in the mountains as a field doctor. When she gets caught, she spends two years as a prisoner, breaking both her thumbs at the base, only to be released when they discover her parentage. After a slow recovery, Hero goes to Milpitas, a city in the Bay Area, where Sol has settled with his wife Paz, a nurse who works 16 hour shifts to pay for it all, and their young daughter, named after Hero, but goes by Roni. Most of Hero's backstory is doled out piecemeal, as her past is very much her present. The meat of the novel is the everyday life that Hero starts living in Milpitas, living with her uncle's family, driving Roni to and from school, then to faith healers in the hopes of clearing Roni's extreme case of eczema. One such healer is Adela, who operates out of her restaurant. It's there she meets Roslyn. There's a clear infatuation between Hero and Roslyn early on, but first Roslyn introduces her to her close circle of friends. Slowly Hero emerges from her past trauma, but not so much is healed (because, never), but awakens to a new phase of life, that is separate from her past, but also not. She is of her past. She is of her culture, her community, of this new world. Castillo does a remarkable job of this, by having dialogue in English, Tagalog, and Pangasinan. The characters are tough and tender, hanging on to what they know. America may not be the heart, but in their lives, in what they are trying to create and hold on to, America is in the heart.
