Day 12 book 12 #12daysofbooksbywomen of color to buy as holiday gifts for people you especially love-including yourself: Whereas by Layli Long Soldier. “this is a ceremony” “act accordingly.” This book of poetry is language unbound. It’s a stunning act of written resistance. Oglala Lakota poet Long Soldier dismantles the discourse of the government’s 2009 “Apology to Native Peoples” and evokes broken treaties, exhumes buried language, and reclaims the strength of becoming in the face of enduring colonial violence, the rooted and borderless territory of grass. .

Day 11 book 11 #12daysofbooksbywomen of color to buy as holiday gifts for people you especially love-including yourself: Insurrecto by Gina Apostol. In 1901, Filipino revolutionaries in Balangiga, Samar pulled off the most successful uprising against a US colonial army since the Lakota, Cheyenne and Arapaho victory at the 1876 Battle of Little Bighorn. US forces retaliated with a massacre in which General Jacob Smith ordered his troops to “kill everyone over ten.” Apostol imagines the details of not the massacre but the masterminding behind the victorious uprising. She does this through the ingenious use of two current day protagonists, one a filmmaker and one a translator, who write conflicting scripts about the event. The result is a surprisingly hilarious ride that takes the reader through an experience of almost joyful colonial subversion.
If you’re a writer, the craft of this book might just blow your mind. If you’re a reader, you’ll appreciate Apostol’s fresh voice and her ability to bring humor along with depth to such a heavy—and erased—moment in history. .

Day 10 book 10 #12daysofbooksbywomen of color to buy as holiday gifts for people you especially love-including yourself: America is Not the Heart by Elaine Castillo. This book is 416 pages long and still I didn’t want it to end. It’s a sweeping novel that deftly moves between the northern Philippines and northern California telling the story of three generations of young women who are not so far apart in age. Castillo weaves issues of immigration, class, gender, sexuality, colonization and armed struggle into a sort of second life coming of age story. How she does it all in what seems like an effortlessly epic novel is beyond me, all I know is I already can’t wait for her next book. .

Day 8 book 8 #12daysofBooksbyWomenofColor to buy as holiday gifts for people you especially love-including yourself: Emergent Strategy by Adrienne Maree Brown. Continuing the theme of books that project worlds I want to live in: WOW. This book embodies the wonder and wow factors that are key to Brown’s worldview. She describes the practice of emergence, first introduced to her by Octavia Butler’s writing and by Brown’s mentor Grace Lee Boggs, as developing the mile-deep relationships that can create complex systems of change, growinginch by inch toward scale. Emergence is adaptability, biomimicry, the shapeshifting of longing, and trust in critical connections rather than critical mass. Written in stirring prose and full of playful and inventive tools, this book is a resource for everyone who longs for a fresh take on working for radical change. .

Day 7 book 7 #12daysofBooksbyWomenofColor to buy as holiday gifts for people you especially love-including yourself: Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Sigh. The essays in this collection shimmer. I feel good just thinking about it, even better when reading and re-reading it. Kimmerer is a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, a botanist and indigenous culture keeper whose storytelling weaves a world I want to live in: a world where western science coexists with indigenous wisdom and where values of spirit, reciprocity and interdependence are woven into matter and relations like braids of ceremonial sweetgrass. I learned about synchronized fruit masting and the reciprocity of basket weaving, tree felling and the growth of black ash groves. These are just two of the examples that Kimmerer shares of the magic that can happen when humans are in right relationship with nature. .

This is the new What to Expect When You’re Expecting + postpartum parenting book written with the shocking belief that mothers have the right to know all about the incredible scientific feats our bodies achieve without being judged for our emotions and our choices. This book has amazing facts about placentas breasts breastmilk pelvic pain microchimeras and more, and tells a universal scientific journey, a widely held cultural journey, and an intimate personal journey that many mothers and parents (to be, new and seasoned) will be inspired by. But it’s not really just for mothers. Everyone who came from a mother should read it. I really believe that. .

Day 5 book 5 #12daysofBooksbyWomenofColor to buy as holiday gifts for people you especially love-including yourself: Sourcing Siapo by Penina Ava Taesali. Mixed race Samoan-American poet Taesali has crafted a work like the Siapo of its title—the intricate pounded mulberry bark cloth known as one of the oldest forms of Samoan art. This intricate book length poem is at once narrative and experimental, moving with the rhythms of ocean waves but cutting like the double edged sword of kinship. It rings with the ancestral wisdom of a family not just surviving racism, sexism, alcoholism and homophobia but transcending survival through art, the reaffirmation of love, and the reclamation of Taesali’s roots in the Pacific Islands. .

Day 4 book 4 #12daysofBooksbyWomenofColor to buy as holiday gifts for people you especially love-including yourself: Invocation to Daughters by Barbara Jane Reyes. I quote from this collection often because to me these poems are magic. Reyes creates prayers, devotions and incantations to the fierce sisterhood of women’s being in relation to patriarchal structures of family society and religion. Her poetry is a balm for aching souls and an invitation to all Pinays and women of color searching for a coven of collective love and authenticity. .
