There are three moments that I knew would change my life the second they happened: getting hired by @culturejedi to help start what became the Center for @mediajustice, meeting my homie for life @juan21stcentury, and starting IVF with the doctor who first brought the procedure to the Caribbean. Getting into the @jackjoneslitarts 2019 retreat is now the fourth. Yah, I feel like my life just leveled up! 🍀🌟🎉💃🏽 Thank you to @cheemobile for fully funding the Yi Dae Up Fellowship for Asian American prose writers and to Kima Jones and the whole wonderful Jack Jones Literary Arts team. . . Repost @jackjoneslitarts: Please meet @jensorianowrites, our 2019 Yi Dae Up fellow in nonfiction. Jen Soriano is a Filipinx-American writer whose work has appeared in Pleiades, Waxwing, Reappropriate, Seattle Magazine, and TAYO Literary Magazine, among other journals. Jen holds a BA in History and Science from Harvard and an MFA from Rainier Writing Workshop. She is at work on a lyric memoir about historical trauma and the neuroscience of healing. Another big thank you to @cheemobile for fully funding this opportunity. #jjlaretreat . . #writerscommunity #writersofinstagram #writerslife #writerscommunity #writingcommunity #womenwriters #womenofcolor #nonbinary #womenofcolorwriters #nonbinarywriters #woc #wocwriters #wocwritersofinsta #jackjones #jackjonesliteraryarts #asiansforblacklives #asians4blacklives #18millionrising #18mr #retreatlife #writingfellowship #writingretreat

Heeeey check out what Judge @melissafebos had to say about my essay “Unbroken Water,” which she chose as the winner of the 2019 Penelope Niven Prize in Creative Nonfiction. It’s an amazing and humbling thing when another writers connects with your words and when you get to feel seen and bridge with others through such a solitary art as writing. Congratulations to all the other 2019 #internationalliteraryaward winners @lauralminor @elizabeth.edelglass @jamaicabaldwin Toni Plummer Sara Phipps and thank you to the @centerforwomenwriters for all their support of women and nonbinary writers over the years. #writerslife #writersofinstagram #writinglife #writingcommunity #writerscommunity #womenwriters #womenwhowrite #womensrights

So much of my life has been shaped by the years I spent building some of the foundations of communications practice and organizational infrastructure of the Center for Media Justice alongside @culturejedi And @amy.sonnie It wasn’t easy work but it was rewarding as hell and a small part of me grew more whole with each moment of building the capacity of targeted communities to speak for themselves. Happy 10th anniversary to the Center for Media Justice and here’s to decades more because we all deserve the freedom to communicate, to organize, to share our perspectives, to CHOOSE, to re-enter, to dissent, and to have the infrastructure we need to be heard (am I right @teamreframe?) . . #10yearsofMediaJustice #mediajustice #openinternet #netneutrality #digitalsanctuary #lifeline #lifework #movement #technologyforliberation #cancelthecontract

Speaking of broken histories and healing, so grateful to @tayoliterarymag for publishing my review of @ejrdavidphd’s important book on raising a family with the analysis experience and loving resistance to transform oppression and break cycles of intergenerational trauma. This one’s for my son Teo 💜 Link in bio. . . . Thinking a lot about being broken and unbroken. How claiming illness can be healing in an ableist world and how claiming healing is not about overcoming or avoiding but about confronting and digging in and doing the work. And the work of healing is sometimes sweet but often it hurts like hell. There are no shortcuts, there isn’t even a destination. There’s just a practice: of licking wounds, of tenderness, of rocking, of flowing, of stuttering and staggering and of lamenting because even as we claim joy and count blessings we also have the right to take seriously our grief and our sickness and our pain. #notsorry #nodeflection #reflection #unbrokenwater #brokenthings #Lachinecanal #stlawrenceriver #StLawrenceSeaway #colonizedlandscapes #colonizedbodyscapes #mohawkland #sacredwater #kanienkehaka #tiothiàke #latergram #healingtrauma #historicaltrauma #traumaflowsdownstream
