My next video journal from my winter 2019 trip goes live on Saturday. I got an early start and drove from Death Valley to Zion for a change of scenery. In many ways, I felt like I was giving up on Death Valley too soon, but the strong wind was difficult to work with, and the conditions were far more ideal in Zion. In years past I might have just stuck it out in Death Valley, but that isn’t always the best move. I think it is best to be both patient AND flexible. @arcaswissusa #largeformat #8x10 #believeinfilm

Working with large format has taught me a sense of patience. My approach is to find an interesting subject, determine when the light will be best, select a composition, then wait for the good light. I’ve learned a lot by this approach, and it seldom lets me down. On this particular day, I was wandering through a dune field at mid-day when I found this rock. I studied the scene for a composition, and figured it would look decent after sunset. I hiked back to my truck, got my camera, then set up a composition and waited several hours until the light was best a half hour after sunset. Thankfully the wind cooperated and stayed calm while I made this long exposure on Fuji Provia 100F with my Arca Swiss F Metric 8x10 and my Nikkor 300mm 5.6 lens. . . . . . . . #tagitplanetearth #landscapelover #filmisnotdead #believeinfilm #largeformat #8x10 #provia100f #ishootfujifilm #landscape_lover #igshotz @igshots #worldplaces #travelandlife #TheBest_Capture #landscape_captures #pixel_ig #keepitwild #leaveitbetter @deathvalleynps #earthfocus #naturephotography #master_shots #epic_captures #beautyofnature #roamtheplanet #earthpix #getlost @fujifilm_profilm

I shot this photo on day 2 of my January trip to Death Valley. I positioned my camera here the day before, then secured it to the ground with an 18” metal ground screw and some very strong cord. I slept in the back of my truck that night, and I could feel my 4Runner getting rocked in the wind. Thankfully my camera survived the night just fine. While setting up this composition, I had no clue that the moon would be in my shot. It was a complete surprise the next morning when I watched it slide right into the composition. This was taken on Fuji Provia 100F 8x10 with my Arca Swiss F Metric 8x10 and a Fuji 240mm A lens. . . . . . . #tagitplanetearth #landscapelover #filmisnotdead #believeinfilm #largeformat #8x10 #provia100f #ishootfujifilm #landscape_lover #igshotz @igshots #worldplaces #travelandlife #TheBest_Capture #landscape_captures #pixel_ig #keepitwild #leaveitbetter #deathvalley @deathvalleynps #earthfocus #naturephotography #master_shots #epic_captures #beautyofnature #roamtheplanet #earthpix #getlost @fujifilm_profilm

I just posted a first look video of the new @intrepidcamera second generation 8x10 camera over on my YouTube Channel. There have been a lot of changes, including a new focusing mechanism, a much stronger front standard, captive knobs, and the ability to store the camera with rear standard oriented either horizontal or vertical. I will post a full review after I have taken it into the field on my spring backpacking trip.

My first video journal from my January trip to Death Valley goes line this Saturday on my YouTube Channel. It was a very interesting trip, and I managed to shoot quite a few images that I am very proud of. You might notice that some of the videos in this series are longer than usual. I included some long-form clips in several key places to give a better sense of being there. I look forward to sharing the results from the trip!

This is a photo I shot way back in 2009. This was taken on 4x5 Fuji Velvia 100 with a Toyo 45AII camera and a Nikkor 75mm wide angle lens. This is one of the very few local photos I have taken. I seldom shoot seascapes because they can be quite frustrating with large format. The coast is often crowded with people, and large format cameras attract a lot of attention. I end up with a constant stream of people asking if I am shooting a Hasselblad. No joke. When you combine that with trying to get a proper exposure, time the waves perfectly, and not really having any place to set down my equipment (film holders, light meter, etc), it is a minor miracle when a photo turns out. I really do want to shoot more local stuff, but probably not along the coast. . . . . . . . . . #tagitplanetearth #landscapelover #filmisnotdead #believeinfilm #largeformat #4x5 #velvia100 #ishootfujifilm #landscape_lover #igshotz @igshots #worldplaces #travelandlife #TheBest_Capture #landscape_captures #pixel_ig #keepitwild #leaveitbetter #earthfocus #naturephotography #master_shots #epic_captures #beautyofnature #roamtheplanet #earthpix #getlost @fujifilm_profilm
