With all the snow that fell in Zion on Monday, I decided to drive from Death Valley to Zion to make use of the conditions. This is a scene I photographed this morning. The mud ripples and the water are all frozen, and I had a long lasting glow compliments of a nearby sandstone cliff. So far on this trip, I have photographed two scenes in Death Valley, and three scenes here in Zion. I will definitely swing by Death Valley again later in this trip, but snow and ice in Zion is too good to pass up.

One of my goals for my spring trip to the Redwoods was to take some time to get to know this new location. Here’s something a bit different from my day one video. You can check out the video on my YouTube Channel, and my Day 2 video goes live this Saturday. Special thanks to the folks at @orukayak for making this possible.
My first video from the Redwoods goes live a week from Saturday on my Youtube channel (June 15th). In the mean time, I am getting ready for the second half of my spring trip, a backpacking trip to Southern Utah. I really enjoyed my time up in the Redwoods, and it was a great experience getting to know such a different environment. It rained every day — and quite hard at times — but I still manage to capture a photo that I am very happy with. I look forward to sharing the story of the trip, and all the moments that led up to that pure moment of zen when I managed to put myself in the right place at the right time.
I’ve just returned from spending 5 days up in the Redwoods of Northern California. It was a great experience, and certainly very challenging at times. I managed to photograph 5 different scenes, and I will keep my fingers crossed that at least some of the photos turn out. I look forward to returning again next spring, and exploring even more. In the mean time, I am getting everything ready for a backpacking trip out to canyon country in Southern Utah. I learned from my winter trip that I do best if I break my solo photography trips into two halves. In this case, I spent 5 days up in the Redwoods, then returned home for a few days before I head off to Southern Utah. I find that I often burn out after about 5 days in the field, and this technique seems to work well for me. #believeinfilm #largeformat #8x10 @arcaswissusa #ishootfujifilm @fujifilm_profilm
This is the final photo from my January trip to Death Valley. After spending the morning exploring some nearby salt flats, nothing really peaked my interest, so I returned to the location I photographed the day before, and found a more intimate composition of this mud flow. This photo was taken just as the sun was dropping behind the mountains at sunset, but it was passing through a thin layer of clouds, and that helped to soften the otherwise harsh light. This was taken on @fujifilm_profilm Provia 100F using my @arcaswissusa F Metric 8x10 and a Nikkor 450mm lens. . . . . . . . . . . . . #tagitplanetearth #landscapelover #filmisnotdead #believeinfilm #largeformat #8x10 #provia100f #ishootfujifilm #landscape_lover #igshotz @igshots #worldplaces #travelandlife #TheBest_Capture #landscape_captures #pixel_ig #keepitwild #leaveitbetter @deathvalleynps #deathvalley #earthfocus #naturephotography #master_shots #epic_captures #beautyofnature #roamtheplanet #earthpix #getlost
I took this photo on day 7 of my January trip to Death Valley. It all started with a VERY early morning drive 40 miles south of the Badwater basin. It was a few hours before sunrise, and I was on a mission. You see, the day before, I was taking some photos of @wildernessinfluencer on the side of the road. By the end of the day I realized I lost one of his hands. That’s right folks, I got up several hours before sunrise so I could retrace my steps along the side of the road in search for a tiny plastic hand that fell off my dol.... *clears throat* action figure. I searched two areas by headlamp, but couldn’t find his dainty little man hand. I felt a bit let down, then started driving north again along Badwater road. It was then that I noticed some clouds in the night sky, and figured there might be some interesting light on the Panamint range at sunrise. I stopped on the side of the road, and set up this composition in the dark. I hung out there all through sunrise, and there was a brief moment when some warm direct sunlight illuminated the mountains. This photo was taken on @fujifilm_profilm Provia 100F 8x10 film using my @arcaswissusa F Metric 8x10 with a Nikkor 450mm lens. . . . . . . . . . #tagitplanetearth #landscapelover #filmisnotdead #believeinfilm #largeformat #8x10 #provia100f #ishootfujifilm #landscape_lover #igshotz @igshots #worldplaces #travelandlife #TheBest_Capture #landscape_captures #pixel_ig #keepitwild #leaveitbetter @deathvalleynps #deathvalley #earthfocus #naturephotography #master_shots #epic_captures #beautyofnature #roamtheplanet #earthpix #getlost
My Day 7 video from my January trip to Death Valley goes live this Saturday on my Youtube Channel. This still-frame from the video gives a feel for how vast Death Valley really is. You can walk for miles and miles, yet somehow feel like you are exactly where you started. I will be heading out again in the next several weeks to the canyons of southern Utah. I look forward to pointing my camera at interesting things, and getting passed by that pesky Prius. . . . #tagitplanetearth @wildernessinfluencer
